Epistemology is another core concept of philosophy which
seeks to explain the authorities in which we place our trust while seeking
truth. There are many different ways to validate knowledge—God, science, God as
science, experience, sensory perceptions, feeling, the self, etc.
Nina learns a big lesson about the nature of perfection. She
questions her mother’s authority, mimics Lily’s lifestyle and grows to fully
trust Thomas’ philosophy. So what faculties was she tapping into when in those
moments of metamorphosis when the “feathers” underneath her skin begin to poke
through, when the sink around her fingernails and the scratches on her back
bleed? If it was a dark force within her, where did it come from?
