Metaphysics is a core concept of philosophy which seeks to
explain the nature of reality. How do we reconcile the duality of our perception
of the material and the immaterial— the mysterious relationship between the
mind and body? Metaphysical arguments also tend toward cosmological arguments
about the origins of existence.
The beginning is filmed with the style of a documentary, as
we are walked through Nina’s day. Aronofsky’s representation of our physical
world is ordinary and realistic, yet magnified through the lens of a dancer.
When presented an acceptable rendition of “normal” for thirty minutes, the
contrast between Nina’s controlled, collected life and the forces interrupting
her routine is shocking, unsettling, yet undoubtedly exhilarating to witness. Metaphysically,
we understand that Nina can’t be growing wings, but for Nina how real is the
metaphor? What is her reality and can we relate to it?
